Coast & Country’s New Directions programme, which is part of the Youth Employment Initiative (YEI) and funded by the European Social Fund, has enabled a South Bank man to get his first apprenticeship.
20-year-old Robert Wymer, from South Bank, had undertaken a number of courses and work placements since leaving college in June 2016 but had been unsuccessful in gaining employment.
After attending a local jobs fair Robert registered for the New Directions programme and attended six sessions, which included skills such as CV and letter writing and job searching techniques. One session was dedicated to preparing for an interview for a work trial for the position of Customer Service Apprenticeship at Eston post office. Robert has now completed his work trial and is starting his Apprenticeship.
Emma Grimes, Youth Employment Initiative Manager at Coast & Country, said: “This job will give Robert the chance to learn new skills and also increase his understanding of life in the workplace.
“Interviews can be very daunting and the work with his advisor paid dividends in helping him secure this opportunity. We all wish him the very best of luck.”
Robert Wymer said: “The interview preparation made me feel more confident and ready for my interview. The New Directions programme has really helped with job searching and made the process a lot more enjoyable. I’d recommend anyone looking for work to register and take part.”
Eston Postmaster Gary Sandhu said: “Initially we took on Robert on a six week trial. Towards the end of that we decided to take him on as an apprentice. Robert is keen to learn and willing to work. He is loyal and committed and the customers really like Robert.
“Robert is receiving on-the-job training and he has received lots of support from experienced staff. Our Post Office offers a wide range of products and services so there is a lot to learn but we are going at the pace that is right for him.”
The New Directions team at Coast & Country works with businesses and young people aged 15 – 29 to source jobs, traineeships, apprenticeships and work placements. The team is also linking with employers to gain a better understanding of their requirements and training needs, and is developing bespoke training programmes and apprenticeships.
