The committee will discuss the themes around the topic of fly-tipping and waste with a view of breaking these down into different work streams.
Councillor Audrey McMillian, Chair of the Place Select Committee at South Tyneside Council, said: “This is a huge issue that covers many areas and as such we must take a measured approach to ensure that we address all of the concerns our residents may have.
“We know that fly-tipping and litter is something that is high on the agenda of our residents and we must do everything that we ca to tackle it – working hand in hand with our partners and local community.
“To take forward the commission we will break down the issue into separate work streams which could include the perception of litter and fly-tipping, the role of the fast food industry and new technology that could help us deal with these issues.”
Littering and fly tipping in particular is not only irresponsible, hazardous, unsightly and costly to clean up. It is a criminal offence. The Council and its partners take the issue of illegally abandoned waste extremely seriously and take action against anyone they can identify as being responsible.
Over the past 10 years there has been a 60 per cent reduction in fly tipping incidents. The commission will look to see how this figure can be reduced even further.
Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the meeting, which takes place at 10am, on Tuesday 26 July, at Council Chamber, Jarrow Town Hall.
