Staff at the Yarm branch of Darlington Building Society are showing their support for this year’s British Legion Poppy Appeal by selling hand-knitted poppies.

The poppies, which are available for £2.50 each, are individually knitted and sewn by customer sales assistant Pam Jones who has been hand making the poppies for the last three years.

The money raised from the poppies will be boosted by Darlington Building Society’s community fund, which gives donations to causes nominated by staff, with each branch able to choose which worthy cause they would like to support.

Last year the branch raised more than £500 for the Poppy Appeal, which is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign and runs year-round. All the money raised by the Poppy Appeal goes towards providing help and welfare to serving, ex-service personnel and their families.

Pam Jones, said: “I’ve always knitted as far back as I can remember, so I’m really glad I can put it to good use and raise money for such a good cause.

“I started making poppies for some of the other staff in the branch and, after receiving lots of compliments from customers, I realised we could sell them to raise funds for the charity.

“This is the third year that I’ve been making the poppies and every time I say it’ll be my last year, but they’re always so popular that I may well end up making more for next year.

“It takes me more than two hours to make each poppy, so it’s a real labour of love. Our customers are always so supportive and we raise lots of money, which makes it all worthwhile.”

You can purchase your handmade poppy from Darlington Building Society’s Yarm High Street branch for £2.50, all of which will go to the Poppy Appeal.
