Darlington couple gets keys to first house during lockdown

A Darlington couple is celebrating after collecting the keys to their first home thanks to Thirteen’s shared ownership scheme.

Ella Cawthorne, 21, and Aron Stranks, 24, were able to pick up the keys to their new build home due to the government’s policy on handovers for empty properties. The couple, who have been unable to see each other because of the UK’s lockdown, were reunited outside their new home, albeit two metres apart.

Claire Kitching, Sales Manager for Thirteen Homes, said: “Shared ownership is a great way for people, particularly the younger generation, to get onto the property ladder. The current lockdown in the UK has made buying a home a lot more difficult but we’re pleased to be able to offer a great, though different, service to our customers who are purchasing empty and newbuild properties.

“I’d like to wish Ella and Aron the very best in their new home.”

Ella said: “Buying a house is a stressful process, particularly when you’ve never done it before. Add a global pandemic to the mix and it seems virtually impossible! I’m so pleased we’ve been able to collect the keys and now the lockdown restrictions are starting to be eased, I’m looking forward to moving in very soon.

“It was definitely an emotional day, seeing Aron for the first time in almost two months but having to stay two metres apart was really difficult but it will all be worth it in the end.”

Shared ownership is another way to get on the property ladder. The homeowner buys a percentage and pays rent on the rest, which is owned by Thirteen. Buying a percentage means a smaller deposit and a smaller mortgage, enabling people to get onto the property ladder sooner.
