Newcastle United Foundation and Foundation of Light, the registered charity of Sunderland AFC, were announced as joint charity partners for 2015 and 2016 in December last year.
The partnership is now well on its way to achieving a goal of £50,000 by the end of 2015 which will directly benefit communities on Tyneside and Wearside.
Funds have been raised through bucket collections in the airport and donations of foreign currency from returning holiday makers.
Newcastle International Airport staff have also taken part in fundraising events including an 80 mile walk and 80 mile cycle ride celebrating the airport’s 80th birthday.
Both charities have also benefited from fundraising at Newcastle International Airport events including a special Race Day.
David Laws, Chief Executive at Newcastle International Airport commented, “We think it’s vital that we support our local community and we’re delighted at how successful the partnership has been so far.
“Our success with both foundations has been one of a number of highlights throughout our historic 80th anniversary year, which has included the start of the United Airlines inaugural service to New York and the completion of our new £14m departure lounge.
“I’d like to thank all the generous people who use Newcastle International Airport, who have made a donation for their support and congratulate our staff who have challenged themselves to make a difference to local lives.”
Both charities use football to change lives across the North East through a range of sport, education and health programmes.
