Drop In helps lonely young people over summer holidays thanks to Players of People’s Postcode Lottery

Pond DippingA drop in for young people in Newcastle has a packed summer programme to try and help eliminate loneliness over the summer holidays.

The West End Youth Enquiry Service (WEYES) Drop In, run by local children’s charity Children North East, runs afternoon and evening groups throughout the year and is hoping its summer programme will help more young people to feel less isolated.

Free activities will be run throughout the summer including trips to the Cinema and Wet and Wild, outdoor activity days and a visit to Animal Inside Out at the Centre for Life.  The International Day of Friendship is on 30th July and with that in mind, the programme looks to encourage relationship building as well as offering information and advice on a range of topics such as mental health, sexual health, education and training.

Lynn Renwick, Service Manager at Children North East said, “Loneliness is not just an issue for older people in our community and many young people come to us for help to socialise with other young people. The success of the weekly drop ins that we run at WEYES, together with the support received from Players of People’s Postcode Lottery, has meant we’ve been able to put on a bumper summer programme this year.”

It’s great for us to be able to provide even more support and activities throughout the summer holidays to ensure young people have somewhere they feel comfortable and can stop feelings of isolation and loneliness which are all too familiar over the long summer break.”
