Plans for a new residential development near Chester-le-Street are set to move forward after Durham County Council’s planning committee said that it was minded to support the scheme.
Durham-headquartered Banks Property had put forward proposals for a development of up to 190 new family homes on a 7.4 hectare site on Pelton Lane, and has been carrying out a range of consultations over the last few months with local people, community groups and businesses about plans.
A planning application was submitted to Durham County Council in December last year, and after receiving a recommendation for approval from the Council’s planning officers, it has now won the backing of the planning committee members by a margin of nine votes to one.
More than 60 people attended four drop-in sessions that Banks Property put on in the local area about the project in December and January, with the overwhelming majority of feedback received about the project plans being favourable.
Support for the scheme has also been expressed by Pelton Parish Council, Newfield & Pelton Lane Ends Residents Association, Chester-le-Street & District Business Association and Roseberry Nursery and Primary School, which is close to the development site.
Lewis Stokes, community relations manager at The Banks Group, says: “Having had a recommendation for approval for this scheme from Durham County Council’s planning officers, as well as considerable support from local residents, groups and businesses, we are very pleased that the Council’s planning committee has today been minded to approve our plans.
“Our Pelton Lane scheme will be located on a site that has previously been identified as suitable for this sort of development, and is in an area where we are certain there will be strong demand for the homes that will now be built.
“Staying in or moving to the places in which people want to live should be an option for everyone, and increasing the supply of quality homes across North East England through developments such as this will contribute to making this a realistic goal.
“We’re very grateful for the local backing we received during the many months of consultation that we carried out across the community, and will now be looking to move the project forward as soon as possible.”
