Durham youngsters are being offered the opportunity to try out gymnastics this Easter with some of the best in the sport at Deerness Gymnastics Academy.
The home of British, European and World Champions, Deerness Gymnastics Academy, will be hosting an Easter holiday camp from Tuesday 11 – Thursday 13 Aprils, at the gymnastics academy in Ushaw Moor, for children aged between 4yrs and 12yrs.
There will also be a taster session for children aged 12 and over who’d like to try out Freestyle Gymnastics too on Monday 10 April between 10 am and 12 noon.
The daytime sessions will take place during the school holidays providing the opportunity for youngsters to give gymnastics a try. The sessions will include use of the world class gymnastics facility including foam pit, trampoline, sprung floor and tumble track and will be instructed by fully qualified high-performance coaches from the club.
“Recreational gymnastics is really popular here at Deerness Gymnastics Academy with more than 500 children taking part each week. Our holiday sessions are always popular both with children experiencing gymnastics for the first time and those wanting to take extra classes during the holidays,” said Katie Lawton, high-performance gymnastics coach, Deerness Gymnastics Academy.
“Gymnastics provides many young people throughout Durham and the north east with the opportunity to improve their health and physical development, promote social and emotional skills as well as boost their confidence”, said Katie.
“These sessions are a great way of learning and practising gymnastic skills and strengths at the same time as having fun. They will hopefully inspire and encourage more people to get involved with the club and join our sessions that run all year round, from baby-gym to elite classes.”
The sessions form part of the community programme introduced by the club after it took over the running of Deerness Gymnastics Academy in 2011, as it aims to make gymnastics coaching available to all ages from novice to elite level.
Deerness Gymnastics Academy, which has Matt Baker as its patron, has become one of Britain’s top gymnastics clubs over the past twenty-five years, with over 100 international gymnasts including fifteen World and European Champions in its roll of honour. It is not only one of the most successful clubs in Great Britain but it is also recognised on the International scene as one of the top clubs in the world.
The sessions will take place 12noon – 2 pm from Tuesday to Thursday 13 April. The cost is £6 per session and includes a healthy snack and drink.
Freestyle Gymnastics is Monday 10 April 10 am – 12 noon and the cost is £6 for the 2-hour session.
