Festival of Events to Mar Opening of New Look Yarm Library

A FESTIVAL of events is being held to celebrate the reopening of the newly refurbished Yarm Library.

The new look library, which also houses a new Newcastle Building Society Branch, will throw open its doors today (September 5).

And there’s a lot to look forward to in its opening fortnight, with a festival of events including author sessions, a CSI night and a special ‘Three Boro Writers in Yarm’ event which sees Harry Pearson, Daniel Gray and BBC Tees’ Bob Fischer talk everything from Teesside to football to sci-fi.

But the highlight is set to be a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, offering free family fun for the whole community from 10am to 12noon on Saturday, September 10.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “The library has undergone quite a transformation as part of our investment programme to update and improve town centre branches.

“There’s stylish furniture, self-service facilities which improve the customer experience and allow people to report any issues, as well as improvements to the children’s section, outdoor garden area and disabled access. It’s an altogether more modern and pleasant facility.

“Now we want the people of Yarm to come and see it for themselves and so we thought the best way to celebrate the reopening was with a festival of interesting and varied events for people to enjoy.

“We’re also delighted to have formed a ground-breaking partnership with Newcastle Building Society, which will provide another good reason to visit the library by offering a range of financial services to local people.”

Damian Thompson, Customer Director at Newcastle Building Society, added:

“We’re looking forward to extending a warm welcome to our new library branch, which offers the full range of savings and mortgages services, alongside face to face financial advice. It’s wonderful to see such a valued community resource being improved for Yarm residents and we will be playing our part in the exciting festival fortnight of events.”
