The classic fairy tale is the chosen topic for this term and Keepmoat hosted 14 students at its £13m Moorland View new housing development to demonstrate why bricks are indeed better than straw or sticks.
Students were shown materials that are used to build new homes, including a demonstration on bricklaying and an important health and safety talk.
Sarah Booth, community engagement and investment manager at Keepmoat, said: “Getting out of a classroom and seeing something first hand is sometimes much more engaging for pupils. These site visits allow them to fully understand and appreciate construction, but more importantly recognise the need to be vigilant around building sites.
“As well as the current housing shortage, our trade is also facing a skills shortage, and this is why we are always more than happy to work closely with the local schools and colleges where we are delivering new homes, as a way of showcasing the benefits of this diverse industry.”
The project is the latest in a series of initiatives where Keepmoat has worked with local primary schools in County Durham and follows on from similar interactive sessions with schools in Sherburn Hill and Bowburn.
Nicola James, Deputy Head Teacher at St Andrews Primary School, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed visiting the building site and learning about the different materials used to build houses. Afterwards some of the children said that they wanted to be builders when they grow up!”
