Most people want to give their mum the world on Mothering Sunday, but financial budgets simply won’t allow it. Thankfully, most mums say that it’s not really about the money spent on them for Mother’s Day, but more about the time that they can spend with their families. So, if you’re on a budget this March, there’s no need to worry as you can still treat your Mum to a wonderful day. We’ve put together a list of free or inexpensive things that you can do in the North East for Mother’s Day.
If the weather is on your side, then there are plenty of things that nature-lovers can do for free in the North East of England. For example, you can visit the Northumberland Coast, the ‘Area of Outstanding Beauty’ where you can explore beach walks, stunning views of Bamburgh Castle, excursions to the Farne Islands, or find a scenic place to stop for a tasty Mother’s Day lunch in a café. Or, you could even bring a picnic and eat whilst enjoying the views. Click here for some great gift ideas to present to your mum as you enjoy the scenery together!
Priced from just £10 for entry to the castle, this is the perfect destination for Mother’s Day for anybody who’s interested in exploring castles and other historic sites. This castle has some glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, so you can be sure that it’s an interesting and fun day out for both adults and children alike, with plenty to see and do including interesting exhibits, cannons, and an aeroplane history display. You can also stop by at the castle café for a spot of lunch.
A popular attraction for bird-lovers, Falconry Days Northumberland in Hexham has a 5*rating on TripAdvisor and is priced quite cheaply, with family tickets available for just £15. Home to over seventy-five birds of prey from around the world, the centre is open daily from 11am, and along with seeing the birds in action, visitors can also enjoy provided snacks and hot or cold drinks at the various picnic areas. You can also pay extra to see exclusive bird shows and more.
Hareshaw Linn Walk
Located in Bellingham, Hareshaw Linn is Northumberland’s National Park and home to some of the most stunning views in the UK. With free, convenient parking right at the entrance to the popular walking route, this is a great place to come with your mum to spend Mother’s Day if the weather is nice. At the top of the walk, you can enjoy the gorgeous views of the pools and waterfall that joins the Hareshaw, eventually flowing into the River Tyne. Be aware that it can be muddy in places, so rubber boots are a good idea!
There’s no need to break the bank when treating your mum this Mother’s Day, as some of the best things in nature are free (or at least very cheap) to see and experience! The North East has some stunning beaches, walks, castles and more that are perfect for spending quality time with your mum.
