Free family barbecue at Marden Quarry

Families can grab a bite to eat as they enjoy one of North Tyneside’s most picturesque parks this weekend.

To celebrate National Love Parks Week, a free family barbecue will be held in Marden Quarry car park this Saturday (July 22) between 11am and 1pm.

As well as the barbecue, there will be other free activities on the day, including a nature hunt to explore the park.

Marden Quarry is just 10 minutes walk from Whitley Bay town centre, on Marden Road South. It is a local nature reserve, with a large wildfowl lake supporting breeding birds such as the mute swan, mallard, moorhen, coot, tufted duck and seasonal migrating birds.

This event is free and there is no booking required, food is allocated on a first come first served basis, although you must be over the age of 16 to cook on the barbecue. For more information, call Park Warden, Craig Thompson on 07583 225 859

This year also marks the quarry’s 40th anniversary since it was opened as a nature area by HRH Princess Margaret. There will be a special tree planting event held on 22nd November this year to celebrate and mark the occasion.

If you have a particular memory or a photograph that could be shared at a special exhibition later this year, email More details about the event will be released in the autumn.
