Screen Shot 2015-06-24 at 10.42.32ENTHUSIASTIC and energetic volunteers are wanted to join a chorus of circus performers as part of Stockton International Riverside Festival (SIRF).

Performers from across the globe will once again head to Stockton from 30 July to 2 August for four days of both spectacular, large scale shows and small, intimate performances.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is calling on people to join them in SIRF15 to help tell the story of Instant Light, an interpretation of a story commissioned from Sara Maitland which tells the magical tale of how Stockton became a festival town.

The theme of Instant Light will be presented in episodes over the full weekend starting on SIRF’s launch night, Thursday 30 July, where volunteers will have the chance to work closely with Slung Low Theatre Company on the opening show, The Boat.

Dressed as circus performers, they will welcome the visiting circus troupe, greeting them from dry land as they arrive into Stockton by boat.  Together the volunteers and circus troupe will lead the audience along the Riverside to CirkVOST’s aerial trapeze performance, BoO.

Volunteers will also have the chance to work on the Community Carnival onSaturday 1 August, create a vibrant show in the heart of Stockton and guide the parade through Stockton High Street.

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “SIRF is a major part of our diverse events programme and this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a large-scale, exciting community celebration. Not only that but it is a unique chance to meet new people, gain some valuable work experience, and develop your skills. I encourage anyone who would like to volunteer to register their interest.”

Up to 100 volunteers will be recruited. No performance experience is necessary but volunteers must be aged 18 or above and be available for rehearsals on the evenings of 27, 28 and 29 July.
