Growth in export sales drives new investment at Aavid Thermacore

A Northumberland-based manufacturing firm has invested in new technology to help meet the demands of a burgeoning international order book.

Aavid Thermacore Europe specialises in the design and manufacture of thermal management solutions for a variety of industries including aerospace, medical, military, telecommunications, chemical processing and transportation.

The firm, which employs 75 people at its facilities in Ashington, has acquired a new Mazak 530 vertical CNC (computer numerical control) milling machine which will increase capacity and improve already world-class levels of performance reliability.

Designed to withstand environmental constraints of temperature change, corrosion, mechanical shock and vibrations, all of Aavid Thermacore’s products are precision engineered to the highest quality to achieve optimum performance for its global customer base.

More than 75 per cent of Aavid Thermacore’s business is international with the company exporting to countries across Europe, Asia and Australasia.

Jim Robson, Aavid Thermacore’s vice president, operations, said:  “This is the first technology investment we’ve made this year but I don’t expect it to be the last.  We’ve seen an increase in demand for our products not only by volume from new and returning customers but also in the complexity and diversity of their requirements.

“Our ability to innovate coupled with the financial strength to invest has established our Ashington facilities at the centre of the global industry.  For example, on the back of work we’re doing with the European Space Agency, we’ve recently transferred production of our k-Core composite material, which has five times the thermal conductivity of a standard aluminium heat spreader, to Ashington in order to bring the product closer to its market.”

Last year, Aavid Thermacore exported to more than 20 countries worldwide.  With a strong emphasis on product development, the company works exclusively with cutting-edge, technology-driven businesses, universities and research institutions.
