THE multi-million pound restoration of Middlesbrough Town Hall has now passed the halfway mark – and the public can see the work for themselves.
As part of the Discover Middlesbrough Festival two hard hat tours have been organised to show off the Heritage Lottery Fund-supported refurbishments.
On Wednesday, October 25 and Wednesday, November 1 (from 1pm-2.30pm, booking required) visitors will be given the opportunity to view the ongoing major makeover which will improve access, address maintenance issues and open up hidden spaces to the public, including the Courtroom, Police Cells and Old Fire Station.
The tours will follow a short talk in Middlesbrough Council Chamber, open to all, on the history of the building and the ongoing works.
Liz Hayward said: “We are now over halfway through the transformation of the Town Hall into a very impressive venue which everyone can easily enjoy, while maintaining its elegance and grandeur.
“Already the inside scaffolding is coming down, new staircases and refinished floors are now in place, stonework cleaned, the beautifully restored Courtroom glass ceiling is rich with colour and decorating is underway everywhere.
“We can’t wait to show off a wonderful refurbished building everyone in Middlesbrough can be very proud of when we reopen next spring.”
Hard Hat Tours are not suitable for those with limited mobility and are only available to adults (18+) due to the constraints of the construction site.
Participants must wear sturdy closed footwear. All other PPE will be provided by the construction company KIER. There will be more public tours and new events in the future programming.
The Middlesbrough Town Hall Project is supported by National Lottery players through a £3.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). More information can be found at mytownhall.co.uk.
