Healthier Takeaways on the menu in Redcar and Cleveland

TAKEAWAY owners in Redcar and Cleveland are being encouraged to follow simple steps to produce healthier menu options.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council’s Public Health team is working with takeaway owners to help tackle the obesity problem and wider health issues associated with poor diet, in particular high fat, salt and sugar intake, by providing free ‘takeaway master classes’.

Takeaway owners with a food hygiene rating of three and above can book on to one of two sessions to be held onWednesday 13 April.  The first will be held from 10am to 1pm with a second session taking place from 2pm to 5pm at the 25K Centre, Ayton Drive in Redcar.

A number of takeaway business have already booked place on the half day course, so places are limited.

They will benefit from the invaluable advice and support on offer and will be encouraged to introduce good practice and promote healthy choice options on their menus.  The National Federation of Fish Friers will also be present to discuss healthy cooking practices.

Cllr Lynn Pallister, cabinet member for health and housing, said:

“We all enjoy an occasional takeaway, but unfortunately the takeaway business has developed a reputation for serving calorie laden and relatively unhealthy food.

“We want to help takeaways overcome this reputation by introducing healthier ingredients, preparation and cooking methods without compromising on taste or profits.

“Attending these free sessions can also help takeaway businesses increase custom, widen customer choice, save money and improve business reputation.”
