A PILOT scheme has been launched to bring Healthy Heart Checks to communities across Middlesbrough.

Three Community Hubs in the town have been selected for monthly visits which will allow residents to be checked for early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.

The town’s Live Well Centre in the Dundas Arcade will also host the sessions for anyone eligible.

The scheme is being introduced by Middlesbrough Council’s public health team to complement the NHS’ Health Heart Check initiative based in GP surgeries.

Many wards in Middlesbrough have low uptake of this service and there is evidence that a community based offer could help increase uptake from those people who have not taken up the GP offer.

The criteria for qualifying for a Healthy Heart Check is to be aged 40-74, to not have had a Healthy Heart Check or NHS Health Check in the last five years, to have not had a heart attack or stroke previously, to not have diagnosed diabetes, kidney disease and to not be on medication for high blood pressure or statins for cholesterol.

The sessions are due to take place at:

  • Thorntree Community Hub – first Friday of each month, noon-5pm 01642 246827
  • Hemlington Community Hub – first Thursday of each month, 10am-3pm 01642 591918
  • Newport Community Hub – first Wednesday of each month, 1pm-5pm 01642 802892
  • Live Well Centre, Dundas Arcade – first Tuesday of each month, 10am-3pm 01642 727579

Cllr Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: “We are delighted be bringing this pilot scheme to a number of Community Hubs across the town as well as the Live Well Centre.

“There is nothing more important than our health and prevention is always better than cure. These Healthy Heart Check sessions offer Middlesbrough residents a straightforward MOT on a number of issues giving peace of mind or identifying problems early.

“We would recommend anyone eligible to take up the offer and for others to encourage anyone they know who is eligible to get themselves a Healthy Heart Check.”
