Innovative learning disabled people create summer themed club night experience

A group of young, creative learning disabled people are putting the finishing touches to their third club night experience at ARC, and are inviting other learning disabled people aged 18+ to join in the fun.

The Arctic Piranha club night on Saturday 16 July at ARC will take on a ‘Summer Nights’ theme and the organisers have some special treats in store.

There will be inflatable six foot palm trees, Hawaiian leis, beach balls, tropical themed decorations, tiki style cocktails and plenty of summery tunes to dance the night away to.

Arctic Piranha came about at the request of learning disabled people in the Tees Valley who were looking for somewhere safe to enjoy a night-clubbing experience.

Christopher Evans, 22, who helps to plan the events said: “Arctic Piranha is a brilliant club. We are adults and want a good night out, so we just want to promote it to as many people as possible.”

A group of young adults have now formed their own planning group based at ARC, and take the lead on deciding the music, themes and drinks list for the popular club nights.

The club nights take on a different theme each time, and have been designed to specially cater for learning disabled adults and offer a chill out area and safe spaces to dance and socialise.

Vici Wreford Sinnott, Disability Agent of Change for Cultural Shift said: “I can’t think of a better way to kick off the summer. Our planning group have had great fun coming up with fun photo booth props and decorations. We’re expecting a karaoke sing-a-thon so get there early and get your name down!”

Arctic Piranha club nights form part of Cultural Shift, a three year project funded by the Spirit of 2012 Trust. Cultural Shift, delivered by ARC in partnership with Little Cog, is a comprehensive three year programme of dynamic arts activity involving disabled people at every level.

Tickets cost £3, which does not include drinks or snacks. For more information about Arctic Piranha or to book tickets for the upcoming club night which starts at7.30pm, call ARC’s Box Office on 01642 525199. Care support is not provided so please bring a companion if you require assistance.
