A project to replace 1km of old water pipes in rural County Durham is underway – protecting water supplies and quality for customers in the area.
Northumbrian Water is investing £450,000 in the upgrades on its network on Cocken Road, west of Leamside.
Work started this week and is expected to take around four months to complete. The project is being delivered by the water company’s partner, United Infrastructure.
A road closure, with a signed diversion via Great Lumley, will be in place from Monday, February 2, to enable this work to take place in a way that’s safe for the team and for motorists. This will be from the Cocken Lane junction to just west of where the road passes beneath the A1.
Access will be maintained for residents and businesses, including Cocken Lodge Golf Course.
Brian Hardy, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said: “This work will help to protect water supplies, and water quality, in the area for generations to come.
“We know the road closure and diversion will add a little extra time for some motorists, but we trust they will understand it is necessary for the safety of all concerned, and we will maintain access for residents and businesses. We’d like to thank those affected for their patience and understanding while we carry out this important work.”
