A North East building firm has been recognised as a master builder after JD Joinery and Building Services scooped one of the top prizes in the Federation of Master Builder Awards for the construction of a unique zero carbon home, Preston Springs in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Preston Springs, which is a certified Passivhaus property, was completed in 2018 in the town of Leyburn in Richmondshire by JD Joinery and Building Services and has been recognised by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) as the Best Low Carbon Home in the Northern division.

The award was announced during an award ceremony held in Manchester recognising the finest examples of building work undertaken across the joint Northern region, stretching from the North West, Yorkshire Trent and the North East up to the Borders, as judged by the FMB.

Preston Springs is a private home and was designed by Mark Siddall of LEAP Architects to offer a range of unique features and deliver an energy efficient home of the future.  The property utilises carbon reduction construction and design techniques and is 32 times more airtight than traditional building regulations require.  Preston Springs received official certification as a Passivhaus in early 2018, one of only a small number of UK residential properties to do so.

Joe Dixon, MD of JD Joinery and Building Services said: “I am absolutely delighted that Preston Springs has been recognised by the Federation of Master Builders in the best low carbon home category of the Northern FMB awards.

“Delivering quality at every turn is a key focus of my business and as one of only a handful of building firms experienced in the construction of Passivhaus properties, this is a particularly special award.  Building to Passivhaus standards is a challenging and highly skilled form of construction and this award is an acknowledgement of the talented team at JD Joinery and Building services by the FMB.”

JD Joinery and Building Services has occupied the position as one of the leading residential construction firms in the North East for over ten years.  The firm has produced a number of award-winning schemes, including domestic extensions and renovations as well as large-scale private new build projects throughout the region, from North Yorkshire to Northumberland.

The success of the firm in the domestic building market recently led to a new venture with the launch of JD Homes in 2018.  JD Homes brings the care and attention applied to the construction of Preston Springs to larger-scale housing developments with the first residential development from JD Homes in Stannington released for sale last year.  The Stables is a collection of five properties priced from £325,000 and features a range of bungalows and detached family properties constructed with the JD Joinery emphasis on quality and style.

Joe Dixon comments: “The FMB is one of the leading organisations representing building firms in the UK and its membership base showcases the best and brightest in the construction sector for the domestic market.  To be recognised by the FMB highlights our constant drive for quality and we look forward to what the rest of 2019 will bring the business.”
