With the long, cold winter nights drawing in, The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle continues its mission to support the city’s homeless and vulnerable by preparing 250 hot meals daily, alongside offering friendship and crucial support.

Recently, Trustee Jackie Boardman organised a special evening dedicated to the “friends” of the Kitchen who have dogs. Recognising the profound bond between people and their pets, Jackie said, “Pets can be a lifeline for some of our friends. They provide companionship and love to those who sometimes struggle with life’s challenges.”

Research shows that for those experiencing homelessness, having a dog can provide emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation, and even improve mental health. Dogs can offer a sense of purpose and routine, as well as unconditional love, during some of the most challenging times. For many, their pet is not just a companion but a family member, making it vital to ensure their well-being too.

During the event, over 100 pet gifts, including treats and toys, were distributed to bring joy to these cherished companions. Jackie was joined by TV and radio personality Vicky Pattison, who helped hand out advent gifts and lend her support for the evening.

Vicky Pattison, a passionate advocate for The People’s Kitchen and proud North East native, has also been championing the Feed a Friend for a Fiver campaign. This initiative ensures that hot meals remain available throughout the harsh winter months. Reflecting on her commitment to the Kitchen, Vicky said:

“I’m incredibly proud to be from the North East, where the sense of community and generosity is unmatched. The People’s Kitchen, running since 1985, is a vital lifeline for those experiencing homelessness, food poverty, and hardship. Sadly, the demand for such services is greater than ever, but the kindness and volunteer spirit here shine through.

“The Feed a Friend for a Fiver campaign highlights how a small donation can provide warmth and sustenance to someone in need during the coldest months of the year.”

Vicky added: “Especially at Christmas, a challenging time for vulnerable people, it’s crucial to extend kindness and love. I’m honoured to advocate for this fantastic charity and encourage everyone to donate, volunteer, and help those in need. Together, we can create hope and be a light in the darkness.”
