A leaflet highlighting some of the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside most iconic landmarks has been launched by the Institution of Civil Engineers to help residents and visitors to understand the contribution made by civil engineers to the area.
The leaflet features a map and information on popular destinations across the city’s Quayside such as the Sage, BALTIC Contemporary Art Centre and Centre for Life, along with interesting information about the history of the city’s infrastructure, and some stunning photographs of the Newcastle and Gateshead landmarks depicted on the leaflet.
Launched to coincide with the Easter Holidays and aimed at families looking to enjoy a day out on the city’s picturesque Quayside, the leaflet will be available to download from the ICE website and will be distributed by key visitor information points.
Michael Taylor MBE, who is chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers North East Heritage Group, created the leaflet, which is also supported by the North East and Cumbria Region of Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. Pictures were provided by Newcastle College students who won a competition run by the ICE.
Michael said: “I wanted to highlight the extensive infrastructure that makes the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside recognisable around the world.
“The Quayside is such a unique and distinctive part of the country, something that locals may take for granted and perhaps don’t appreciate in our day-to-day lives.
“I am passionate about the contribution that the civil engineering profession makes by creating these world icons and invite anyone visiting the area to pick up a leaflet and explore.”
John Johnson, who was at the time Gateshead Council’s Engineer played a key role in the creation of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge said: “It is fantastic to see the ICE has produced something that illustrates the numerous Quayside landmarks. The leaflet highlights some of the wonderful attractions Newcastle and Gateshead have and will be a great source of information for visiting families.
“I would like to thank the Institution of Civil Engineers for their support and promotion of the leaflet campaign and I hope it will generate further awareness of what is on our door step, and the outstanding work of our civil engineers.”
