ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LEADING EXPERTS is visiting Sunderland during Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May).
Ian Donaghy’s book ‘Dear Dementia: The Laughter and the Tears’ is recognised by mental health practitioners as one of the best ever written on the subject.
The author will be talking about his book at the City Library and Arts Centre in Fawcett Street on Thursday 19 May between 1-2.30pm.
The book is included in the ‘Reading Well Books on Prescription for Dementia’ scheme available in city libraries and community venues. It is one of only 25 included in the Alzheimers Society recommended reading list.
A previous winner of the Care Trainer of the Year at the British Care Awards, Ian is one of the country’s leading authorities on Dementia and a regular speaker at keynote mental health events and conferences.
Sunderland City Council, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “Dementia affects an increasing number of families, and is something we all need to find out more about to be able help all those who suffering from this debilitating condition.
“I hope listening to someone as inspirational as Ian Donaghy about his experiences of how people and their carers and loved ones cope, will provide some re-assurance and hope.
“Our libraries play a vital role in providing community venues for events such as these, and in providing the wide range of books containing the specialist advice and information people need on subjects such as Dementia to help them in their everyday lives.”
