Latimer’s Seafood Deli & Café in Whitburn has become kit sponsor for Sunderland Rugby Football Club (SRFC) U14s boys’ section in a bid to promote the sport and their well-known and respected brand across the city.

Owners of the thriving seafood business, Robert and Ailsa Latimer, are great fans of rugby, so when Ailsa had a chance meeting with John Lamb, one of the coaches of the U14s SRFC boys’ team it was a sponsorship opportunity she was excited to take up.

Ailsa said: “My grandfather Walter Rutherford, was a captain of Northumberland rugby seniors and probably would’ve competed at the highest level for England had World War II not interrupted; plus, Robert and I are massive rugby fans and have been to Murrayfield on many occasions – this opportunity just seemed a good fit for us.

“John is obviously very committed to his team of U14s at Sunderland Rugby FC and these boys really put their heart and soul into training and playing in addition to any school commitments they may have. I think it is a wonderful team sport, one I would actively encourage anyone to get involved with.”

John a Sunderland-based coach is an insurance underwriter, he’s coached the team at SRFC for the last three years and his son Alexander, 13, who attends Thornhill Academy, is team captain.

“I’m obviously very grateful for the support shown by Latimer’s Seafood which has resulted in the team receiving great branded kit for the season ahead.

“Ailsa and Robert are big rugby fans and Ailsa has a wonderful family link with the game, so we’ve found great common ground. My family are fully immersed in rugby, my wife and I have a shared love of it, with our son captaining the U14s and one of our daughters’, who is studying for A levels at Gateshead College, competing as part of the Sunderland Flames – the senior SRFC ladies’ team.

“We have a thriving rugby community with over 200 people including the senior teams, minis (U7s) and juniors competing across the various SRFC teams. We’re always looking for new players, so I would encourage anyone of the right age to make contact with SRFC if they wanted to sign up for the U14s or indeed any of the other teams.

“We’ve got players from schools right across Sunderland in our U14s including St Aidan’s Catholic Academy, Southmoor Academy, Thornhill School and Whitburn Academy and I would love to see more get involved.”
