In his brand new show, Psychovertical: A Higher Education, which will coincide with the release of the film Psychovertical by award-winning director Jen Randell, Andy Kirkpatrick looks back at forty years of climbing and adventures, from the Alps to Patagonia, Yosemite to Greenland, a story all the things that make life amazing.

Making Tracks: Chouk Bwa Libète

Drums, poetry and trance from Haiti’s voodoo heartlands.
Chouk Bwa Libète are a traditional Haitian Mizik Rasin (‘roots music’) ensemble bringing together the essence of Haitian Vodou without unnecessary frills. Their music rises in waves of percussion, vocals and dance, authentically inspired in the moment and communicating nothing but the unique joy of this shared spontaneity.
With deep roots in the religious rites of West African Vodún, their repertoire blends traditional songs with compositions by lead vocalist and poet Jean-Claude ‘Sambaton’ Dorvil. The celebratory power of their sound has already ignited audiences at major festivals around the world, including Roskilde, WOMAD and Amsterdam Roots.

Riverside Ragas: Shreya Devnath (Carnatic Classical Violin)

Shreya’s performance will be a Carnatic Classical Violin Solo concert, bringing forth the elements and values of South Indian classicism in a Bani (style) renowned for its purity and elegance. The concert will be a seamless blend of composed and improvised music, with the pieces drawing from the diverse cultural background that South India is blessed with.
It will be a musical journey of compositions by varied composers from different states of India, with different emotional and musical intensites, all bound by the fabric that is Carnatic music. Interpreted though the violin, the musicality of these compositions will be brought forth, through the simple and pure magic of melody, rhythm and aesthetics.
Shreya will be accompanied in this concert by Prathap Ramachandra on the Mridangam and Abhiram Sahadevan on the Kanjira.

Newcastle Bach Choir: Messiah

Handel Messiah
Although Handel’s most famous work, Messiah, is associated with Christmas, the text of Part Two deals with the Easter story, making it highly appropriate for performance during Lent. This performance is largely based on a version Handel directed in London in 1743 and includes several numbers not usually heard.
The Newcastle Bach Choir and period instruments of Newcastle Baroque are joined by a stellar line-up of Samling soloists and international countertenor Lawrence Zazzo.
