North East teens give back to their communities on NCS Action Day

Hundreds of teens in the North East will spend Saturday 6th April making a positive impact in their local community. NCS graduates from all over the country will be running projects to mark Action Day.

The annual event showcases the lasting impact teens are having on local communities after completing NCS, the fastest growing youth movement in this country for a century, with nearly 500,000 young people taking part so far.

These young people have built skills for employment, such as resilience, confidence and leadership, built trust between people of different backgrounds, and given back to their local communities through a social action project. Action Day is a meaningful mechanism to allow NCS grads to continue making their mark in their communities.

The exciting projects planned in the North East, designed and delivered by NCS graduates, range from Climate Change campaigns to supporting adults and children who are victims of domestic abuse. The young people will be supported by a host of local community partners from the likes of If You Care Share to The Harbour.

The top themes, designed by the young people themselves, for action in the North East this year are:

Harry, 19, from North Tyneside, said:

“Before going on NCS I didn’t have much confidence in my own ability to make a difference in my community. As a young person, people often assume that you’re disengaged, but being empowered to make a positive impact in my local area has been really eye opening for me.

“Action Day was amazing for me. It was a perfect chance to do something with my NCS mates, who are now just mates, which gave us the motivation to all come together again to make a difference again about something we all care about. For us it was suicide prevention and awareness, collaborating with If You Care Share in Durham.

“I’m quite ‘techy and designed a Snap filter and made a geo-fenced filter campaign which young people in Durham would see. We got over 2,000 engagements with it and loads of people using the filter to post their own Snaps in support of our cause. It was brilliant.”

Over 12 million hours have been donated by nearly 500,000 NCS participants across England and Northern Ireland.
