Staff and students at Northumberland College are giving back to their local community this Christmas after setting up an on-campus donation point to collect food items for individuals and families in financial hardship.

Organised by the College’s Student Association on behalf of Wansbeck Valley Food Bank, the initiative will allow the local charity to better serve people in South East Northumberland over the festive period, with hundreds of food items now being donated.

Customers using the food bank have usually been referred by community organisations and care professionals, and the donation by College students will go some way to relieve the strain and pressures of Christmas and New Year for those who may be struggling financially. Student Association President, Chloe Woolfenden, explained, “The call for donations was received with an amazing response by our students and we have been able to supply the food bank with several deliveries of food, toiletries and other items over the past few weeks.

“The College plays an essential role in our community so to give something back that is truly meaningful and can help those that require some assistance in whatever way, is a must. This is the first year that I have been involved and its humbling to see everyone pull together and embrace the community spirit.”

Diane Keltie, Administration Assistant of Wansbeck Valley Food Bank added, “On behalf of the charity, I would like to say a huge thank you to all involved for their support.”
