A Northumberland first school is to celebrate the special relationship that can be fostered between the elderly and the very young with two special visits this Easter.
Children from the reception and nursery classes at Abbeyfields School in Morpeth, which is part of The Three Rivers Learning Trust, will delight the residents of both St Christophers House and Renwick House local sheltered accommodation schemes with visits in the lead up to Easter.
These special visits, which will feature singing and an Easter bonnet parade, have been inspired by the Channel 4 show, Old people’s home for four-year-olds, which has highlighted how much the very young and the elderly can learn from each other.
Headteacher Sandra Ford explained: “Learning to communicate with a wide range of people is essential for all our children and we value the opportunity visits like this give our pupils to learn from adults outside school, while having fun. These visits will involve our youngest children and they’re really looking forward to them.
“As well as helping our pupils to develop their understanding of all sections of society, we hope these visits will enhance the already positive relationship we have with the staff and residents of both St Christophers House and Renwick House.”
To prepare for the visits, the children have discussed Easter bonnets in school before making them at home with their parents and carers. They’ve also worked hard to learn a selection of modern and traditional Easter and spring songs to perform. Residents will also receive a homemade card daffodil from the children as a reminder of their visit.
Places remain available in both reception and nursery classes at Abbeyfields School. To find out more, visit abbeyfields.the3rivers.net.
