Northumberland Water Treatment Works reach milestone

Work on an £11 million pound water treatment site in Northumberland has reached a key milestone.

The steel frame for Northumbrian Water’s new water treatment works in Murton, Berwick-upon-Tweed is up and out of the ground, as the new building begins to takes shape.

And this week, the first part of the roof was lowered on to the building.

Once it is watertight, the water company will begin to kit it out with the new treatment plants and equipment over the summer.

Northumbrian Water aims to have the works in operation by the end of the year, using cutting-edge technology and energy-efficient processes to treat up to 8 million litres of water every day.

It’s part of a £21 million pound total investment to improve tap water quality for more than 25,000 people in north Northumberland, with construction starting on another new £10 million treatment works in Wooler later this year.

Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, Chris Austin, said: “This is a mini milestone for us and we’re very excited to see the new water treatment works taking shape, making the treatment of water in the area much more efficient and reliable.

“We’ve still got a lot to do but it’s great to see the progress on the project which will provide an excellent quality of supply for the future of communities in the north Northumberland area.”

The water treatment works is being constructed by Northumbrian Water’s supply partners, Mott Macdonald Bentley, and customers can follow the progress by visiting the Berwick page on www.nwlcommunityportal.co.uk.
