Telematics solutions enable a digital management of all vehicles belonging to the company fleet inclusively its trailer.  Telematics is a combination of information technology and communications enabling the networking of different IT-systems and to connect the information from various sources. Fleet management is one of the key applications as it enables the real-time observance of each single vehicle, so that the fleet manager knows at any time, where each vehicle currently located.  Thus, he receives an increased planning security which not only helps to determine the driving route of the respective vehicle, but also contributes to clock the maintenance and service times of the vehicles so that they only rarely fail.

On 15th June 2019, the EU-provision No. 165/2014 was introduced and determines that vehicles exceeding the weight of 3.5 tons or a capacity of eight passengers plus driver must be endowed with an intelligent tachograph – a so-called Smart Tacho.  Such intelligent tachographs should be used to boost road safety, prevent manipulations and strengthen the efficiency of the control procedures to enable a pre-selection.  Intelligent vehicle tracking solutions are here especially helpful as they provide both a continuous overview over the vehicles, its tours and the drivers’ adherence to driving and rest times, but also assist in the administrative tasks of the fleet manager.

GPS-controlled Trailer Tracking for Improved Vehicle Monitoring

Meanwhile, almost every company has its own fleet consisting of lorries and small passenger cars used to keep the company employees mobile and to transport goods. The state-of-the-art, real-time GPS-trailer tracking has been developed into be able to know any time where the different vehicles of the company fleet are currently situated.  Such a telematic solution helps the fleet manager in various aspects, e. g. to improve the control and route-planning of the various vehicles – combined with the ability to monitor the usage and location of the trailer.

More and more, a fleet manager is confronted with a high portion of technology as telematic solutions have become standard.  The functionality of the tools deployed for controlling the company fleet, however, varies strongly, as such systems are generally customized to each company. Nowadays, just one single platform is used to manage the route of the vehicles and to be able to identify the vehicles and trailers of the own company fleet – thereby also report all data about the vehicle, the times and behaviour of the driving personnel.

Necessary Features for Tracking and Control

If the fleet manager intends to streamline the management of the company fleet and to control the trailers belonging to the fleet remotely, he should make use of a real-time tracking solution based on telematics which is both easy to use and informs about all necessary data on the vehicles which are on the road.  The main benefits are:

  1. Map in real-time: By using the Global Positioning System (GPS), the vehicles belonging to the company fleet can be tracked remotely and in real-time.  Thus, valuable data about the vehicle and the driver can be collected.
  2. Detailed log of transport: All movements and activities of the vehicle are recorded, i. e. the entire movements of the vehicle are logs.  The same goes for the vehicle routes and the locations visited. By keeping such reports, the adherence to the tax regulations can be proofed.
  3. Geofencing: Geofencing determines virtual boundaries of specific areas.  When the vehicle leaves or enters such a predefined area, the fleet manager receives a message via a channel.
  4. Time tracking: With the gathering of reports remotely to track the driving time as well as the idle and stationary time as well as the number of trips, the fleet manager is enabled to produce a detailed timesheet.

All data gathered are stored on a cloud platform and can be shown in clear, easy-to-use dashboards and detailed reports which to provide at any time the latest information needed to manage the company fleet at its best.
