Oil Buying Cooperatives helping Residents to Save Money on Heating Bills

With winter just round the corner many Ryedale residents’ thoughts will soon turn to the onset of the colder months and the inevitable budgeting that comes with heating their homes.

For those residents, often in rural areas, who rely on oil to fuel their homes, oil buying cooperatives are a great way to cut bills and at the same time reduce their carbon footprint.  Neighbours that join forces and buy in bulk through a local oil buying cooperative can save up to 10% on their fuel bills.  A co-operative also reduces the amount of tanker journeys being made to deliver the fuel, resulting in less impact on the environment.

Ryedale District Council in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council provide a dedicated oil buying cooperative coordinator, Helen James, who can give advice on the benefits of an oil buying cooperative and the money that can be saved by being part of one.

Communities in both council areas are already benefiting from Helen’s expertise but the partnership is keen to hear from other interested residents sooner rather than later, especially as Helen is due to place the next bulk order for oil on Tuesday 29 September.

To find out more, people should contact Helen on 01723 361518, 07702 736265 or email choices4energy@scarborough.gov.uk
