A MOD re-telling of Romeo & Juliet and a space-set Tempest are set to wow the crowds at Redcar’s Kirkleatham Museum & Grounds in July.
Outdoor theatre specialists Oddsocks Productions are putting a fresh, family-friendly musical spin on two of the Bard’s most beloved works:
- Thursday 12 July, 7.30pm, will see Romeo & Juliet with added mopeds and sharp-cut suits as the Mod-themed tale of star-crossed lovers roars into the park
- Friday 13 July, 7.30pm, offers the intriguing spectacle of The Tempest in space, a true updating of Prospero’s story
Councillor Carl Quartermain, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Communications, said: “You don’t have to go to the West End to see brilliant theatre! This is open air theatre at its best from the nationally acclaimed Oddsocks theatre company who have been performing annually at Kirkleatham Museum for many years.
“They make Shakespeare fun by adding music, songs and a lot of laughs. The plays were always meant to be enjoyed by the masses and Kirkleatham’s ongoing partnership with Oddsocks is helping keep live Shakespeare accessible to everyone.”

Oddsocks advise the audience to bring a chair/picnic rug and to dress for the weather.
Other attractions at Kirkleatham Museum in July include:
- Isobel Hall’s exhibition of textile sailing ships, books and wall art. (Saturday 14 July – 23 September)
- ‘From Woodsmith to the World: The Story of Sirius Minerals’ Polyhalite Project’ outlines the major new mining project which will create more than 2,500 jobs in the coming years. (Exhibition closes on Wednesday 11 July)
- British Photography Awards – this is the last chance to see the images from this year’s competition, capturing the essence of modern Britain. (Ends Saturday 7 July)
- The loss of the SS Rohilla – a special talk outlining the events leading up to one of the North East’s most tragic ship wrecks. (Tuesday 3 July, 2pm – £3 per person)
- A guided walk exploring the history of the museum grounds. (Sunday 1 July, 1pm, £1 per person).
Kirkleatham Museum is open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm. Entry is free although there may be a charge for specific events/exhibitions.
