Overnight closures for A1 upgrade at Gateshead

s300_M42_dusk_940x600A stretch of the A1 near Gateshead will be closed overnight until Friday 20 November as part of a major project to add an extra lane to the dual carriageway.

The A1 will be closed, Monday to Friday, between junction 67 at Coal House and junction 69 at Gateshead Quays on the northbound carriageway, and between junction 69 and junction 68 at Lobley Hill on the southbound carriageway, for work to continue on the central reservation and make changes to the traffic management.

Contractors for Highways England will also be resurfacing the northbound carriageway between junction 67 and junction 68 from Wednesday 28 October until Monday 9 November, including overnights at weekends.

From Monday 2 November until Monday 16 November, including weekends, the A1 southbound carriageway will be closed between junction 73 at Derwenthaugh and junction 68 to carry out resurfacing work.

Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said:

We understand that there are a lot of closures coming up however it is essential that this work takes place.

All the work will be undertaken overnight when traffic levels are at their lowest to keep disruption for drivers to a minimum.

All the closures will take place between 8pm and 6am. Clearly signed diversions will be in place, including a diversion for heavy goods vehicles from junction 66 at Eighton Lodge and junction 77 for the A696.

The closures are part of the £61 million A1 Coal House to Metro Centre improvement scheme which will see the number of lanes increased from 3 to 4 in both directions between the Coal House junction and the Metro Centre junction.
