Partnership presents five show homes on innovative scheme

Etal Lane Show HomesThe first scheme in new a partnership aimed at maximising housing output, has taken the first step in driving interest from prospective buyers in Newcastle, with the launch of five new show homes.

In partnership with Newcastle City Council and Riverside – one of the largest social housing providers in the UK – housing and community regeneration specialist, Keepmoat has unveiled a collection of show homes at the £34m Metropolitan home scheme on Etal Lane.

The development comprises 163 two, three and four bedroom properties for sale, as well as 70 homes being offered with shared ownership by Riverside; and 20 houses and bungalows for affordable rent.

The Metropolitan is the first development from the recently-launched Newcastle Housing Delivery Partnership Framework.  The initiative looks to capitalise on housing output on City Council owned sites, through the establishment of closer working relationships with house builders and Registered Providers.

Land receipts generated from the schemes are helping in the delivery of the City Council’s £25m Future Homes Programme. The £25m package of measures over the next five years will mean more, and better, homes in the city to meet the crisis in family housing, and will help to reduce by 2,000 the number of homes that need to be built in the green belt.

Richard Bass, regional managing director for Keepmoat in the North East, said: “The series of show homes we have opened at The Metropolitan is a big step in driving forward with the Council’s vision for the city.  We are now able to demonstrate exactly what is on offer to aspiring homeowners and occupants; and this will be instrumental in generating interest.

“The Metropolitan scheme includes affordable homes for local people and will help to deliver the Council’s pledge to create a fairer city – for a number of generations.  We are delighted to be involved in this innovative partnership project, which is not only creating some much-need new homes but offering considerable employment and training opportunities for the local community.”

Councillor Jane Streather, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health said: “Newcastle City Council is committed to providing a range of high standard homes that are affordable to all residents in our city.  I am delighted that this new development, the first delivered through our innovative Housing Partnership Framework, will help us do this.

“I have followed progress of this development from the beginning and it is exciting to see diverse range of housing options available on this site. By working in partnership we have been able to deliver 253 homes to meet the needs of the community and individuals for this and future generations.”

Julie Gray Assistant Director of Development and Growth at Riverside said “This development demonstrates how Riverside, Newcastle City Council and Keepmoat have worked in true partnership, using their own land and money to build new homes.

“The development at Metropolitan shows how Riverside continues to promote Home Ownership. The majority of the affordable homes will be sold for Shared Ownership to aspiring first time buyers. Shared Ownership helps bring the costs of buying a new home within the reach of many more households who are looking for a home of their own in Newcastle.”

Etal Lane is located to the west of Newcastle upon Tyne, 4 miles from the city centre close to the A1.
