Aspiring, professional and amateur photographers on Tyneside are being invited to put their creativity to the test by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East.
Ahead of the Institution’s 200th anniversary in 2018, ICE North East has launched ‘Stephenson’s Newcastle’, a photography competition to promote the works and lives of renowned civil engineers, George and Robert Stephenson.
ICE North East is tasking people to photograph 16 locations in the city that are associated with the pair, including the Mining Institute, High Level Bridge and Central Railway Station.
George Stephenson, the ‘father of the railways’ is widely credited with building the first railway line as a self-made mechanical engineer in the 18th and 19th centuries. His son, Robert, who was born in Willington Quay, built on his father’s legacy and is regarded as the greatest engineer of the 19th Century for his work in establishing the railway concept.
The photographs will be featured in ICE North East’s new ‘Stephenson’s’ leaflet, as well as at associated exhibitions to showcase civil engineering and on the ICE website. The winning entrant will receive £200, while £25 will be awarded for every image used in the leaflet.
Penny Marshall, ICE Regional Director in the North East, said: “George and Robert Stephenson were two of the greatest civil engineers the world has ever seen, so it is important to recognise their achievements and how their work has positively impacted generations globally and also here in the North East. Our competition is a fitting initiative to celebrate civil engineering ahead of our bicentenary, and offers the perfect platform for photographers of all skills and ages to showcase their talents.
“2018 is set to be a significant year for everyone associated with the Institution and we are planning a lot of activities in the region to celebrate the achievements of past and present civil engineers, as well as landmarks, which have significantly improved people’s lives.”

- Workshop where the Rocket was built, (Plaque on wall) South Street

- Hawthorns works, Sussex Street
- High Level Bridge at Bridge Hotel
