Popular parade returns to the streets

Parade sponsorsMore than 10,000 people are expected to take to the streets of Newcastle next month to promote equality, inclusivity and acceptance for all.

The Newcastle Pride Parade, sponsored by EDF Energy, Gentoo and Nandos, will set off from Newcastle Civic Centre at midday on Saturday 16 July, travelling along Northumberland Street and Percy Street to Exhibition Park and the Town Moor.

Once there spectators and participants will be able to enjoy an afternoon of live music and activities as part of the Newcastle Pride Festival 2016, including a headline performance by boyband 5ive.

Newcastle Pride, which is organised annually by charity Northern Pride, is one of the largest free LGBT festivals in the UK, attracting a record 71,000 visitors in 2015.

Along with the parade, which is open to all ages, this year’s event will feature a wide range of performances and family-focussed activities, all with the theme be yourself, change the world, #beproud.

Mark Nichols, chair of Northern Pride said: “The Parade is a chance for people from all backgrounds to come together in vibrant celebration of all our similarities and differences and to unite in a way that will make society proud.

“It promises to be a real highlight in this year’s Newcastle Pride festival and I would like to thank EDF Energy, Gentoo and Nandos for their sponsorship and ongoing support.”

Newcastle Pride 2016 is free to attend, although a limited number of VIP and Gold Circle tickets are available to purchase for those who wish to guarantee prime viewing spots for the performances at the Town Moor.

All proceeds raised from the event will be used to help ensure it remains free in future years and to support Northern Pride’s mission to reduce homophobia, promote equality and unite LGBT communities across the North East.

Anyone wishing to take part in the parade on July 16 is asked to assemble at the Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle at 11.30am.
