Writer Mike Kenny said: “The Princess and the Pea was originally by Hans Christian Andersen. I think he’s probably the first bona fide genius of writing for children.

“He was born over 200 years ago and yet his stories are still told, his voice is still vivid, and ugly ducklings, Emperor’s new clothes and others have gone into our language. We use them all the time.”

Mike Kenny is one of the England’s leading writers, specialising in theatre for young people and families. He is the recipient of numerous awards, was included in the Independent on Sunday’s list of Top Ten Living UK Playwrights and his plays are performed regularly throughout the UK and all over the world. The Princess and the Pea will be the third autumn/Christmas show in a row that Mike Kenny has written for tutti frutti and York Theatre Royal.

Leeds-based tutti frutti has more than 23 years’ experience touring nationally and internationally to schools, venues, arts centres and village halls.

This is the first in a number of quality family shows coming to Middlesbrough Town Hall over the coming months including Blunderbus Theatre’s I’ve Seen Santa on December 19 and 20 and Hugless Douglas on February 14 next year.

Children are being invited to attend as their favourite princess and prince and there will be a prize for the best dressed.
