As Remembrance Sunday approaches on November 9th, communities across Northumberland, County Durham, Yorkshire, and Cumbria are preparing to honour those who served and sacrificed for their country.

Honouring Service Across Northumberland
Towns and villages across Northumberland will unite for parades, services, and acts of remembrance.
Alnwick begins the day with a 2:30 p.m. service at St Paul’s RC Church, led by Reverend Tim Moore and featuring music from The Band of the Regiment of Fusiliers and the Alnwick Allstars. The parade will make its way to the War Memorial, where Reverend (Squadron Leader) Kit Walker of RAF Boulmer will lead prayers and the two-minute silence. Afterward, residents are invited to gather at the Alnwick Playhouse for refreshments and a performance of POPPY by Eliot Smith Dance.
Other Northumberland tributes include:
- Blyth: Parade from the Quayside at 10:30 a.m., followed by a service at the Cenotaph in Ridley Park.
- Hexham: 10:30 a.m. parade from Argyll Terrace to the War Memorial in the Market Place, with the Act of Remembrance at 10:45 a.m.
- Morpeth: 11 a.m. service at the Cenotaph in Deuchar Park.
- Prudhoe: Parade from the United Services Club at 10:30 a.m., with wreath-laying at the Lychgate War Memorial at 11:00 a.m., followed by a church service.
County Durham: Marking 80 Years Since VE and VJ Day
Communities across County Durham will hold remembrance events of special significance this year, marking 80 years since VE and VJ Day.
From Durham City to Barnard Castle, parades, church services, and local tributes will pay respect to those who served in conflicts past and present.
Highlights include:
- Durham City: 9:45 a.m. service at Durham Cathedral, followed by a parade through the Market Place and a Spitfire display in Millennium Place.
- Bishop Auckland: Parade and service at the Market Place War Memorial from 10:30 a.m.
- Barnard Castle: 10:40 a.m. service at St Mary’s Church, followed by a parade to the War Memorial at The Bowes Museum.
- Chester-le-Street: Procession from Park View School to Market Place, with a two-minute silence at 10:58 a.m.
- Seaham: Parade from Terrace Green at 10:30 a.m., followed by a service at Seaham Town Park.

Yorkshire: City Services and Local Tributes
In York and surrounding towns, remembrance services will bring together veterans, families, and local organisations.
The main city service will take place at the Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m., with parades, regimental standards, and a two-minute silence led by the Royal British Legion.
Later in the evening, St Lawrence Parish Church will host a Service of Remembrance and Choral Evensong, illuminated by candle-lit lanterns made by local schoolchildren.
Other notable services:
- Selby: 10 a.m. service at Selby Abbey.
- Elvington: Outdoor service at the French Memorial at 11 a.m., followed by a chapel service and wreath-laying at the Yorkshire Air Museum.
- Strensall and Poppleton: Local parades and remembrance gatherings throughout the day.
- Northallerton: Festival of Remembrance at The Forum, 7:30 p.m., featuring the Festival Concert Band and Crash Bang Wallop Youth Theatre Singers.
Cumbria: Coast and Countryside Commemorations
Across South Cumbria, remembrance events will take place in Barrow, Millom, Dalton, and Ulverston.
- Barrow: Parade and service from 10:20 a.m., assembling outside Barrow Town Hall before wreath-laying at Barrow Park at 11 a.m.
- Millom: Service at St George’s Church, followed by a parade and secondary service at St Luke’s Church, Haverigg.
- Ulverston: 2:30 p.m. service at Ulverston Parish Church, followed by a parade and wreath-laying at the Market Place War Memorial.
