On the road to encourage recycling

WSR roadshowSpecial roadshows are calling at fayres in North Tyneside this summer, helping residents to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste.

As part of North Tyneside Council’s Changing Our Thinking campaign, an interactive roadshow is visiting areas across the borough this July.

The team will be manning a stand, providing handy tips on turning dinner leftovers into delicious dishes.

Residents will also be invited to pledge to wash, squash and recycle materials at home – those who keep to their promise will be in with a chance of winning monthly prizes of £100 and a grand annual prize of £1,000.

Speaking about the campaign, Cllr John Stirling, cabinet member for the Environment, said: “Our roadshows have proved extremely popular with the public and are helping to increase our recycling rates.

“Although recycling is second nature to many of our residents, we need every household to do their bit and recycle all the waste they can to significantly reduce the amount we send to landfill.

“Not only does waste sent to landfill damage the environment but it’s also hugely expensive and this money could be much better spent elsewhere, on essential services.

“Rubbish also includes food waste and this is a big part of the campaign; I’d encourage residents to come along and see the team and find out what else can be done with food leftovers rather than them going straight in the bin.”
