Yarm Preparatory School’s games teacher Chris Simpson has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to grass roots rugby.

Chris has been named a ‘hero of the game’ as part of a campaign by Premiership Rugby sponsors Gallagher to champion people within the game that embody the values and spirit of rugby, both on and off the pitch.  It acknowledges individuals whose determination, energy and commitment demonstrate their passion to protect and grow the game.

To launch the season, Gallagher invited 24 inspirational members of the rugby community, including Chris, to Twickenham to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their club’s star player on the hallowed turf at rugby HQ.

The accolade is acknowledgement of Chris’s voluntary work at the Newcastle Falcons.  He has run regular coaching camps and club days at Kingston Park in conjunction with the Falcons Community Foundation and then became Head Coach and latterly Director of Rugby at local club, Houghton. Under Chris’s stewardship Houghton have a full minis and youth section, three girl’s teams, a women’s team and three senior teams. Chris has been influential in developing the coaches’ ethos throughout the entire club. Chris arranges regular trips for the children at Yarm Preparatory School to watch Newcastle Falcons fixtures.

Bill Sawyer, Head of Yarm Preparatory School, said:  “This is well deserved recognition for Chris.  It is great to see that his work in the rugby community has been rewarded in this fashion.

“Our staff throughout the school go the extra mile to ensure that the pupils benefit from their expertise and enthusiasm. Chris is a real asset to the school as one of our specialist sports and PE teachers. All our pupils develop a love of sport from an early age and have the opportunity to represent the school through our extensive range of competitive fixtures.”

Simon Matson, incoming chief executive of Gallagher’s UK Broking and Underwriting operations, said:  “As the Premiership’s new title partner, we will continue to champion the game’s off-pitch inspirational ambassadors, just as much as we savour each and every competitive clash of its on-pitch heroes.”
