Northallerton’s Neon Nights running club are supporting a week long campaign which aims to improve mental health through running.

#runandtalk takes place from 28 January to 3 February and people can sign up to run one mile or further and have a chat with friends, family, colleagues or other runners whilst they are running.

The campaign hopes to get people talking about mental heath, share their experiences and remove the stigma attached to it. It also aims to support people experiencing mental health problems to be physically active through running either by helping them get started or encouraging them to return to running or keep running.

“We know that physical activity is good for our bodies and our minds,” said David Earl – Development Officer – Health and Wellbeing.

“But having a mental health problem can make it difficult to get started, for a number of reasons, ranging from negative body image, or a lack of self-esteem through to practical reasons such as having no one to go with, or not knowing where to get started. Community running groups like Neon Nights give everyone the opportunity to come along and run.

“Neon Nights are holding a series of runs throughout the week from Hambleton Leisure Centre, Northallerton. The runs will be from one mile upwards and will include options for walking, jogging and running so everyone is welcome whether you are new to running, looking to get back into it or a regular runner. Amanda Piper and Sarah Stringer, the run leaders, ensure that the runs are fun and sociable and are both are passionate about improving mental wellbeing”.

Runs are taking place on:

Saturday 28 January 9.30 – 10:30-Neon Nights – 5-6miles

Monday 30 January 2017 5:30-6:30pm – Improvers – up to 3 miles
