RNS Rocks: Maxïmo Park + Field Music + Du Blonde

Friday 21 September, 7.30pm, Sage One

Join three of the North East’s most exciting musical exports as they perform their own music, arranged especially for Royal Northern Sinfonia to kickstart the orchestra’s 60th birthday weekend, and show just how versatile a 21st century chamber orchestra can be.

Ever-changing and politically charged, Maxïmo Park perform their irresistible pop songs about anger, hope, resistance and, above all, empathy – a knockout fusion of music and message from a band on extraordinary form.

Already friends and collaborators of Royal Northern Sinfonia, Field Music will be bringing to life their recent album Open Here, with expanded orchestration following on from their performances with their Open Here Orchestra earlier in the year at the Northern Stage and Barbican in London.

Du Blonde, AKA Beth Jeans Houghton, is a multidisciplinary artist and musician, working with animation, illustration, sculpture, video editing, songwriting and music production. Having recently stepped off a UK tour with Ezra Furman, Du Blonde performs new material alongside songs from her critically acclaimed album, Welcome Back to Milk.

John Smith

Monday 22 October, 8pm, Sage Two

Born in Essex and raised in Devon, John Smith has gained a reputation through relentless touring as one of the UK’s finest guitarists and singer-songwriters.

With five album releases in 11 years, his reputation now extends far beyond the UK folk scene, as reflected by sideman credits including Joan Baez, David Gray, Lisa Hannigan and Lianne La Havas.

Compared as a singer to John Martyn and Ray Lamontagne, Smith has evolved his own transatlantic blend of fingerstyle and slide techniques, switching between acoustic and electric guitars in various tunings. His uniquely intimate take on love, loss or even a mythic murder ballad, combined with his innovative guitar work, have won him a loyal following, made up of people willing to take part in the communion of a song.

Curtis Stigers

Monday 5 November, 7.30pm, Sage One

Singer, songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers has been bringing those worlds together in his own music for the last three decades (along with touches of nearly every other genre one could call to mind), which makes him an ideal candidate to reinterpret Ol’ Blue Eyes’ cherished repertoire for modern ears.

On his twelfth album, One More for the Road, Stigers captures the rare alchemy of hipness, elegance, playfulness and feeling that made Sinatra’s renditions of these songs immortal while adding his own unique twist.

On One More for the Road, Stigers finds his own version of that elusive Sinatra-Basie chemistry with the virtuosic and ebulliently swinging musicians of the Danish Radio Big Band. Recorded in the band’s headquarters, the acoustic marvel that is the DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, the bristling live recording features the DRBB playing vibrant takes based on the original Nelson Riddle and Billy May arrangements, which can’t help but spark inspired vocal performances from Stigers.

Morgan James Plus Special Guests

Tuesday 20 November, 8pm, Sage Two

One voice is all it takes. The right vocalist can make you fall in love at first listen, elicit tears, or bring you back to a different era altogether. A microphone and a stage remain the only necessities. That holds true for New York-based soul singer and songwriter Morgan James.

On her sophomore album, Reckless Abandon, James casts an unbreakable spell with a powerhouse voice and a soulful poise. Freedom and expansion are the threads that bind the collection of 12 original, co-penned tracks with writers from LA to NYC to Nashville and in between. The result is a fusion of pop, funk, and R&B with a classic approach.

James delivers an impassioned performance that showcases her virtuosic vocal range that spans from sultry to spontaneous and controlled, effortlessly. From The Juilliard School to Broadway, by way of a beaten soul-searching path, Morgan made leading appearances in Berry Gordy’s Motown: The MusicalGodspell, and more. Regardless of genre, James delivers passion and technical prowess that is rivalled by few.
