Sneak peak inside Middlesbrough’s New Spirit & Cocktail Bar

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 09.57.18Artist impressions of Middlesbrough’s new Cocktail Bar ‘The Nuthatch’ have been released. Opening in February as part of the regeneration of Bedford Street the visuals show their industrial-artisan décor, with a centerpiece wood burner and a showpiece bar surrounded by stools so you can watch the Bartenders in action!

The Nuthatch, will focus on high quality spirits, with over 100 available alongside a specially crafted cocktail menu with classics and some signature twists.

The venue comes from business partners Matthew Lewis and Simon Hatfield. Simon, who already operates The Townhouse on Linthorpe Road and Tiny on Albert Road, told us ‘we are really excited to be joining the new wave of bars and restaurants in Bedford Street and the already established bars on Baker Street.’

Over the last five years Middlesbrough has sadly seen a decline in the number of pubs and bars. However, recently there has been a real exciting change with new openings of micro-pubs. They are great, small bars, easy to build an atmosphere and really take drinking back to how it should be; an opportunity to socialise with friends and meet new people. Gone are the days where it was all about cheap drinks and dancing until the sun rises.

Neither myself or Matthew are huge beer and ale drinkers, so could see this gap in the market around the bustling new independent quarter of Middlesbrough for somewhere that concentrated on high quality spirits and cocktails.

Our offering will really complement the towns’ current offering. Over the last 18 months venues like Alchemy & Co, Twisted Lip and Sticky Fingers have really started to move the town in a new and exciting direction and hopefully we can really add to that.’

Since securing the venue earlier this year, Matthew has been working on creating a relaxed and welcoming interior and The Nuthatch’s first menu; ‘In creating the interior we have been fortunate to have been given a blank canvas by the developers. We have tried our best to take in the latest ‘trends’, without creating something which will be outdated in a year or two.

Having travelled extensively, we want to create something unique by taking inspiration from some of our favourite bars from around the world, and twisting classics with modern techniques. I’m particularly interested in the trends that are developing on the bartending scene right now and want to bring a little bit of that to Middlesbrough, from gels, foams, and powders, to tea mixology.

We want The Nuthatch to be a real destination venue and a ‘must go’ addition for the more discerning Teesside drinkers.’
