Soul star to headline night of divas

ONE of the North East’s most glamorous fund-raising nights is set to turn into a car wash – as one of soul’s leading performers has been unveiled as the headline act.

The annual Divas and Diamonds Ball is taking place on 14 October at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, raising funds for the Graham Wylie Foundation.

And organisers have revealed that Gwen Dickey, who fronted internationally celebrated soul-funk group Rose Royce, is to perform at the event.

The singer, whose many hits include Car Wash, Wishing On A Star and Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, will be the highlight of what is always a sell-out event, regularly attracting more than 350 guests.

And the singer revealed that she is delighted to be able to support the evening.

“I’ve heard a great deal about the Divas and Diamonds event and it sounds amazing,” she said.

And I’m thrilled to be asked to perform. I know personally how music transforms lives and knowing that the Graham Wylie Foundation is building a music therapy centre for children and young people in the area makes me proud to be donating my performance to this wonderful cause.”

Divas and Diamonds was the brainwave of a group of business women who wanted to create a female-focused ball, raising funds for a chosen charity.

Over the years the event – which includes a champagne drinks reception, dinner and live entertainment – has raised thousands of pounds for various good causes.

This year’s event on 14 October, which has been named Saturday Night Diva, is also supported by Dandy Events, Big Purple Productions and At Sisters Hair and Beauty.

Lynn Waterman, of the Divas and Diamonds organising committee, believes Gwen’s appearance will make the evening even more special.

“Given the theme of this year’s event there couldn’t be a more perfect performer,” she said.

“We are so grateful that Gwen has agreed to perform and that it will be the icing on the cake of what is always a great evening.”

Tickets are now on sale, with Diva Sparkles tables priced at £750 and Diamond VIP packages at £1250, which include front row tables, an enhanced drinks package and premium goody bag.
