A North East children’s charity is thousands of pounds better off thanks to the annual Steve Cram Celebrity Golf Day. Stars from the world of sport joined Cram and businesses from throughout the region at Slaley Hall today, at the event which was held in aid of international charity COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas). After teeing off on Slaley’s championship course, players and other guests gathered for a dinner in the evening – the event is expected to raise over £15,000 for COCO.
Stars from the worlds of football, rugby, cricket, athletics, and TV and radio turned out to support the annual event, now in its 14th year. Cram was joined by the likes of Steve Howey, Roger Uttley, Steve Backley, Craig Hignett, Micky Horswill, Ritchie Pitt, Gordon Armstrong, Mick Hill and Brian Whittle. Also on hand at Slaley Hall were TV and radio presenters and commentators including Colin Murray, Guy Mowbray, Eilidh Barbour, Stuart Storey and Manish Bhasin.
COCO is a Newcastle based international children’s charity that was co-founded by world champion athlete and BBC commentator Steve Cram and former British Army Major Jim Panton in 2000. Since then, the charity has raised millions of pounds and invests those in sustainable projects in remote regions of East Africa, that help alleviate the poverty that prevents children’s education.

As always, the golf day has been really well supported by my friends in the world of sport and by the region’s business community. It’s a real pleasure to play at this venue – we saw some keen competition out on the course, but also a lot of fun. Crucially, we are all determined to raise a lot of money for COCO and that is going to make a huge difference when it is invested into the charity’s fantastic projects in East Africa.”
