Haughton Academy student Joshua Parkinson joined a host of prize-winners of all ages at the annual Student of the Year awards ceremony at The Education Village, Darlington.
Haughton Academy deputy head teacher Steven Clough told staff, students and families: “It was a really easy decision for me when I was asked to nominate a student.
“Joshua has shown such an incredible work ethic. He has been persistent, resilient, focussed and really committed to his studies. He identified his own weaknesses and put in extra work in those areas.
“He even set up an examination desk in the hall of his home to recreate the atmosphere of sitting his GCSEs, which I have never heard of before in the 17 years I have been teaching.”
Teachers had high praise for the students they had nominated including the Education Village Academy Trust’s other schools of Beaumont Hill Academy, Springfield Academy and Gurney Pease Academy.
Beaumont Hill Academy pupil Ethan Dand took the top prize for his ‘excellent overall attitude’ and involvement in school life, including the choir and the student council.
Gurney Pease Academy’s top award went to Oliver Luck who was praised for his politeness and huge smile, his caring nature and cheerfulness.
A pupil described as an amazing role model and ambassador for sport secured the coveted prize at Springfield Academy. Year 6 pupil Emma Doudican has been selected for the third year running to play for Middlesbrough and has taken part in international competitions.
Team of the Year went to Beaumont Hill’s football squad and the Kevin Duffy Community Award was given to the Boathouse Café crew for overcoming their personal challenges and their impeccable manners.
Awards were presented by secretary of the Haughton Residents’ Association Joanna Thompson.
EVAT chief executive Mike Butler told guests: “This is a very special year for all of our academies as we celebrate our 10 th anniversary. Everyone nominated this year should feel especially proud.”
