Students collect ancient honour for being top role models

YOUNG role models have been honoured by staff and their peers for their achievements and dedication to school life.

Northallerton School and Sixth Form College students Lizzie Mallett and Josh Form were presented with the Cuthbert Cross in a closely fought contest from a short-list of inspirational sixth form students.

First awarded in 1910, the sold silver cross is given annually to a boy and girl who ‘by loyal chivalrous and honourable conduct have done the most to enhance the character and reputation of the school’.

The worthy winners, are chosen by students and staff. The Cuthbert Cross is the highest honour the school can bestow.

Languages student Lizzie, 18, who is currently studying A level French, English and psychology, said: “I am extremely happy to have won.

“I remember watching the presentation last year and thinking that it must be great to receive such an honour as it shows respect from both staff and fellow students and also an appreciation for hard work and community spirit.”

Josh, 17, of Brompton, who is studying A level maths, physics, further maths and chemistry, added: “I knew that I had been shortlisted but never thought that I’d win, especially with the calibre of students I was up against.

“It is humbling to know that our names will now be added to the plaque alongside all the other Cuthbert Cross winners in the school hall for generations to come.”

Lizzie, of Northallerton, is hoping to secure place at Newcastle University to study modern languages, translation and interpreting, while Josh is looking to gain a place at Oxford to study physics.

Head of sixth form Bronia Harris said: “Lizzie is a model student, always personable, who tries her hardest and who gets on quietly behind the scenes with a real commitment to her studies and helping others.

“Josh is someone who has an incredibly broad range of talents and abilities, in fact I’m constantly surprised how he fits everything in; he is a real asset to our school.”

Principal Chris Byrne added: “What Lizzie and Josh contribute to our school goes way beyond the classroom.

“We are extremely proud of all of our students so for these two young people to have been recognised above all others is a great achievement and very well deserved.”
