Sunderland College shortlisted for Beacon Award

SUNDERLAND College has been announced as a finalist in the Association of Colleges Beacon Awards.

It has been shortlisted for this year’s College Engagement with Employers Award, which is sponsored by the AoC.

The awards celebrate the best and most innovative practice among UK further education and sixth form colleges.

Iain Nixon, executive director for commercial activity at Sunderland College, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award which recognises our ongoing commitment to the employers we work with.

“We have strong links with more than 600 employers and strategic partnerships with eight of the largest organisations in the city of Sunderland, and we continue to foster new relationships with the business community across the region. As a trusted training provider, we deliver a range of high quality programmes to recruit and train new employees, and upskill and grow the talents of existing employees. It is a very rewarding feeling to know that the judges have highlighted Sunderland College as a trailblazer in employer engagement, and that they have acknowledged the impact this is having on the industries and sectors we support.”

Carole Stott MBE, Chair of AoC Charitable Trust, said: “The Beacon Awards highlight the very best of college initiatives and activities.  Being shortlisted for a Beacon Award highlights not only the good work of the colleges, but also the impact on students and communities. The high standard of submissions to the AoC Beacon Awards is testament to the innovation which takes place across the UK. Great colleges transform lives and communities.  They meet the needs of employers and students by embracing new approaches to teaching, learning and leadership.  The shortlist for this year’s Beacon Awards is testament to this.”

The AoC Beacon Awards will be announced on the evening of 14 November in Birmingham.
