Sunderland full of good sports

THE CONTRIBUTION made to local sport by groups, clubs, volunteers and participants will be recognised at an awards ceremony next week.

Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre plays host to the inaugural Active Sunderland Community Sports Awards on Thursday 26 November.

It follows the BBC North East Sports Awards being  hosted in partnership with Sport England the previous evening, hosted by BBC Look North sports presenter Jeff Brown and BBC Newcastle’s Anna Foster.

The Active Sunderland Community Sports Awards recognise the achievements and contribution of individuals and organisations involved in local sport at all levels.

Categories include ;

– Inspiring Sport in the Community
– Junior Sport Achievement of the Year (Sponsored by Sunderland Sports Fund)
– Sport Achievement of the Year
– Volunteer of the Year
– Disabled Sportsperson of the Year (Sponsored by Everyone Active)
–  Community Sports Club of the Year (Sponsored by Tyne and Wear Sport)

Sunderland City Council’s ‘Active Sunderland’ works with partners across the city creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active and take part in a huge range of physical, sporting, leisure and voluntary activities across the city www.activesunderland.org.uk

Over 250 nominees from  the community network of local clubs,  coaches, and individuals are attending the evening, all worthy of winning one of the awards.

Councillor John Kelly, Portfolio holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture said: ”Regular activity can have a positive effect on our physical and mental well-being, meaning we are more likely to achieve higher standards at school, in the workplace and lead a more enjoyable life.

”Active Sunderland has been working in partnership with local community sports clubs to ensure that Sunderland residents have more opportunities to be active and develop an active and  sporting habit for life.

“The awards evening will provide us with the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and celebrate the achievements of those individuals, clubs and volunteers who are helping to achieve our shared vision of making Sunderland an Active Sunderland and  a better place to live.”
