UK-Wide trends: where does the North East fit in?

Across the UK, ‘sweet’ is the top flavour preference, especially in Belfast, where 50% of residents chose it as their favourite. Meanwhile, the top UK scent is also flowers and grass, showing just how much people across the country appreciate fresh, natural aromas.

Interestingly, younger generations are also more adventurous with flavors; Gen Z ranks high on trying new tastes, while older generations tend to stick to familiar favourites. While regions like Greater London have embraced the growing popularity of vanilla, the North East remains consistent with its love for earthy, coastal, and baked-good scents.

The survey reveals the everyday smells and tastes that capture both regional and national preferences across the UK, with the North East standing out for its love of fresh, familiar scents. Smell and taste are often closely linked; in fact, 77% of respondents agreed that the aroma of a drink enhances its flavour, underscoring how these sensory experiences elevate our daily routines.

As coffee remains a favorite across the UK, flavors like vanilla and caramel are rising in popularity, adding new layers to the nation’s sensory landscape.

“Our survey highlights the UK’s deep affection for sweet sensations, with vanilla emerging as a top aroma, particularly in regions like Greater London and the West Midlands.” says – Ingrid Hayes, Marketing Director of NESCAFÉ Soluble Coffee. “We’re thrilled to introduce our new Gold Blend flavours – vanilla and caramel. These additions to the Gold Blend range not only enhance the sensory experience but also provide a comforting and indulgent option for coffee lovers. They are designed to delight British taste buds and evoke the cherished memories and emotions that only great flavours can.”
